As well as studying highlights, coloured paper allows some great opportunities to experiment with colour mixing.
By using a light colour and a dark colour on coloured paper, you can create an extensive array of hues that can fool a person into thinking they are looking at a full colour picture. The easiest objects to draw are boxes which have regular sides and hence capture even lighting. The more curved surfaces there are, the more gradients are called for, and the shinier the surfaces, the more reflections need to be taken into account.
