In our art classes we use coloured paper to provide mid-tones so we can use dark and light colours to improve
our awareness of highlights. Fruit and vegetables make for excellent subject matter since they are often of one
colour which simplifies the highlights and shadows, and they often have shiny surfaces which are particularly easy to draw. Shiny objects are also good for showing reflected light which is quite tricky to capture because it is so subtle.
