Flowers are great subjects for pictures because they are usually very colourful. They are not without their challenges though. They are often very small and occur in large bunches which makes it difficult for the picture to maintain its focus. There are a couple of ways that this can be dealt with.
One way is to isolate one or two buds and place them on a black background. This eliminates any distraction from the background and gives great depth, but if you use black paper to achieve this goal then you lose a lot of the brightness in the colours.
The other main approach is to soften the background elements of the picture so the central parts remain prominent but the background provides either sympathetic or contrasting colouring. This results in a less dramatic arrangement but a more relaxing outcome.
