Abstract art allows us to play with colour and shape without the encumbrance of references. It allows us
to indulge ourselves and cram in as many bright colours as humanly possible and embrace our favourite shapes
without the restriction of making them believable. While references may be diminished there is still the requirement for hierarchies to establish form and guide the viewer around the picture.
